No, I am not making this up. The Daily Telegraph reported today that Mr. Obama apparently can't get enough of the "pray away the gay" crowd. Moreover, Obama seems to think that virulently anti-queer preachers make excellent gurus, as do anti-choice zealots.
I've been criticized by other queer people for calling Obama an anti-queer bigot in the past on the basis of his history of associating with "ex-gay" Christian fundamentalists and his canonization of Rick Warren (a man who compares us to pedophiles, equates our relationships to bestiality and incest, and has personal and financial ties to Ugandan extremists who terrorize and murder LGBTQ people- see previous posts for links to sources).
So, do I have permission to call Obama an anti-queer bigot now?
Do I have permission to be angry now?
Probably not.
I suspect he'd have to disembowel a 12 year old transgender kid with his bare hands while screaming "faggot" at the top of his lungs in order for liberals to conclude that Obama might be a tad homophobic and transphobic. Even then most liberals and "progressives" would probably claim that the murder was just another part of the ingenious strategy hatched by Obama's omniscient mind to ultimately further LGBTQ liberation. As a mere mortal, I suppose I have no right to question His infinite wisdom.
What line does Obama have to cross before you start holding him accountable?
I am looking forward to hearing the creative excuses all you liberals and "progressives" will undoubtedly make for Obama this time.
I appreciate the "concerns" that many of you liberals have expressed about my well-being because of how "negative" and "angry" I've become since Obama's inauguration, but I assure you that your "concerns" are unwarranted. In fact, such statements are rather condescending.
I find it....interesting....that many of the same people who now claim to be ever-so-concerned and worried about me due to my intense anger towards Obama and my criticisms of his policies never raised an eyebrow when I expressed the exact same sentiments about Bush. Heck, they usually joined in and often took things up a notch or two. Yet when I now angrily criticize their team for the exact same reasons I previously criticized Bush, they suddenly become "concerned" and "worried" about me.
How sweet.
I happen to be concerned about many of you liberals and "progressives" as well. If you persist in believing Obama is a liberal/progressive or that he ever intended to change anything beyond the name on the mailbox at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, then you are so deeply in denial that I am just so concerned about you. I can't help but worry about the well-being of people who are so desperate that they stubbornly cling to the belief that Obama is a progressive Savior despite the mountain of evidence to the contrary.
It just hurts my heart when I think about people like that. I want you all to know just how concerned I am for you.

Fear not, there are at the very least two angry queers in Grinnell College who are against Obama. I'm one of them, and I also happen to be Christian, if that gives either of us extra points.
People will slowly come around; unfortunately, it's probably going to take something really sh*tty happening for them to do so. Stay strong.
Thanks for the encouraging words. As you can imagine, I receive very few of them.
LGBT rights are as Rachel Maddow termed it, a "political minefield". They are basically the reason George Bush won in 2000 using them as a wedge issue to win over homophobic/traditionalist moderates. So I am not really too surprised that Obama hasn't come out in support of our cause.
He has said he will repeal DADT and DOMA. If no work has been done on these issues by the end of his first term, than I would have to agree with you. However he is a politician and we cannot expect him to get everything done in his first few months in office.
I am still angry in Oakland, have you seen this video:

some of the language is a bit general or lacking but overall it's good and insightful. I'd love your opinion xoxo
yo- please take down that picture. gay ain't the new black, and the idea that obama would ever dress in klan robes is just fucking offensive.
i like the site; maybe it's time to include an analysis on race instead of just queers.
Charlie- The post wasn't a complaint about Obama not "getting anything done". It was about his history of (and apparently current) anti-queer bigotry.
Stephen- I saw that video too. It's actually the work of an ultra-conservative pundit named Alex Jones. The advertising is quite deceptive though, and they make it seem almost as if it is going to present a left critique of Obama. I almost got excited about it myself. Then I googled Alex Jones and I realized what was up.
Benjamin- I don't think gay is the new black. In fact, I've stated in other posts that I don't think comparing LGBTQ liberation to THE Civil Rights movement makes any sense except on the most superficial level.
Now- While it is certainly true that the Klan initially directed its hate against black people (terrorizing them via physical assaults, constant harassment, and murder), the Klan has added all sorts of groups to their list. Of course, they know better than to express publicly any intentions to physically assault/murder people nowadays.
However, if you read the major remaining Klan organization's platform today at http://www.kkk.bz/program.htm, you will see that Obama is already enacting one of their proposals (militarizing the US-Mexico border), and his inner circle of spiritual advisors support two others (outlawing abortion, and criminalizing homosexuality). THen there is his history of promoting the ex-gay movement before he became president. Moreover, as I have stated repeatedly, Rick Warren has personal and financial ties to Ugandan extremists who terrorize and murder LGBTQ people.
Clearly I am not suggesting that Obama goes around killing LGBTQ people himself. According to the major KKK groups that still exist, neither do they. Obama does, however, associate (very closely it seems) with people who not only promote aspects the modern Klan's platform, but he is enacting one of its proposals himself. And by elevating his friend Rick Warren to the level of an international superstar in the anti-queer world, he legitimized terrorism and violence against LGBTQ people that is reminiscent of the early incarnation of the KKK's treatment of black people. Ironically, the terrorism and violence he honored in Rick Warren is being directed against African LGBTQ people. That fact makes the picture even more disturbing if you think about it.
I personally find the idea that anyone would dress in klan robes fucking offensive. Given that the modern Klan has expanded its list of undesirables to include Jews, Catholics, Atheists, Communists, LGBTQ people, immigrants (especially those brown Mexican ones), and all non-white people, I think that it is unfortunate that the nation's first black president overtly endorses (and is in the process of implementing) one of its racist platforms and seems to be enamored of pastors who are vocal proponents of some of its other platforms. These pastors are, after all, the people to whom he turns for spiritual and moral guidance. Do you think he would be consulting them if he was strongly opposed to their views & behaviors re: LGBTQ people?
So I agree w/ you that the white robe and hood are offensive. The views they have evolved to symbolize are even more offensive. But if the pointy hood fits....
wow
